“FLYING CREATURES” STREET SCULPTURES HAVE ARRIVED ON WABASH AVENUE
WHAT: 45 “Flying Creatures” Street Sculptures
Part of the Year of Creative Youth
WHERE: Hanging from the street poles along Wabash Ave. between Washington and Randolph Streets
WHEN: This Summer, Fall, Winter and Beyond
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is pleased to present the Flying Creatures as part of the Year of Creative Youth – a citywide celebration of Chicago’s young artists and the mentors who inspire them. An array of kinetic street sculptures – or modern gargoyles – the Flying Creatures were created by students from the youth art programs at SkyART, After School Matters, Dundee-Crown High School, Marengo Community High School and YOUmedia Chicago.
DCASE, in partnership with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) artscape program, installed 45 Flying Creatures on street poles along Wabash Avenue between Washington and Randolph streets on Tuesday, July 24. Many more Flying Creatures sculptures will eventually be installed up and down Wabash Avenue.
Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events have designated 2018 as the Year of Creative Youth – a citywide celebration of Chicago’s young artists and the mentors who inspire them. As part of the “Year of Creative Youth,” Chicago's new Creative Youth Festival on Saturday, September 22, in Millennium Park will showcase young artists in dance, theatre, music, spoken word, the visual arts and more. Admission to the festival is free, and a full schedule with complete details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Presented by Allstate Insurance Company, the Year of Creative Youth will also feature young artists and their work at City of Chicago festivals, exhibitions and events throughout the year. Additionally, the Year of Creative Youth is aligned with “Art Design Chicago,” a citywide initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art—featuring over 25 exhibitions and hundreds of public programs in 2018. Arts education and youth engagement are important components of the overall program, including art making workshops and field trips. Additional grant support for the Year of Creative Youth provided by The Chicago Community Trust.
