HALLOWEEN’S FRANKEN PLAZA INVADES DALEY PLAZA, OCTOBER 25-27 It’s the ghoul place to be! (Chicago)
HALLOWEEN’S FRANKEN PLAZA
INVADES DALEY PLAZA, OCTOBER 25-27 2013
It’s the ghoul place to be!
Calling
all witches and goblins, superheroes and princesses, monsters and
moppets! Franken Plaza will once again invade Daley Plaza (Washington
and Dearborn) for three days, October 25-27, in celebration of
“Chicagoween” – the City of Chicago’s Halloween season.
A
favorite tradition continues as Midnight Circus will participate in the
City of Chicago’s Halloween festival for its 16th straight year with
performances throughout the weekend. Hang on to your hats (and hearts)
as the gravity-defying ghosts and ghouls of Midnight Circus amaze
audiences of all ages with their otherworldly acrobatics and
spook-tacular theatrics. Featured this year, from who-knows-where, is
the one and only Demon Duo!
On
Saturday, October 26 Franken Plaza will host the annual Monster Bash
which includes free hayrides, trick or treating (while supplies last)
and the popular Kids Costume Contest. Joining Mayor Spookenberger of
Midnight Circus as host of the contest will be NBC 5 Entertainment
Reporter Lee Ann Trotter.
The
Kid’s Costume Contest is open to children ages 12 and under and
includes the following categories: scariest, funniest and most original.
There will also be a best costume category for children under 24
months. Children should line up to participate at 11:30 a.m. with the
contest beginning at 12:15 p.m. Prize packages include a pair of tickets
to WICKED, beginning October 30 at the Oriental Theatre.
Adding
a new twist to the costume contest this year will be a category for all
ages in conjunction with WICKED, celebrating its 10th anniversary. To
participate and win these tickets, contestants must dress as a Wicked
character. Homemade and original costumes are encouraged.
In
addition to performances from Midnight Circus and Midnight Circus
presents The Demon Duo Show, Franken Plaza will include an appearance by
the Radio Disney AM 1300 Road Crew, arts and crafts, a Harvest
Marketplace – and, on Sunday, a Wicked sing-a-long featuring some of the
musical’s most familiar songs at 1:30 p.m.
Franken
Plaza’s Friday Film is back again and this year’s presentation will be
Hotel Transylvannia presented at 6 p.m. The animated PG film features
the voices of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Andy Samburg and Selena Gomez
and tells the story of Dracula as a protective father who builds a hotel
just for monsters, keeping humans away from his daughter. He is
successful until a young camper shows up and the two young people fall
in love.
Another
new attraction this year will be Food Trucks at Franken Plaza providing
tasty goodies from their spot just east of the plaza on Dearborn.
Franken Plaza is open Friday, noon-7:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Franken
Plaza is presented by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural
Affairs and Special Events and sponsored by Chicago Transit Authority,
Radio Disney AM 1300 Chicago and 104.3 KHITS.

The annual ball boasts local and national top chefs in support for Meals on Wheels Chicago
Meals on Wheels Chicago celebrates
25 years of the organization’s annual Celebrity
Chef Ball
with a star-studded chef line-up. Held
at the stunning Zhou B Art Center (1029 W 35th St.), the 25th
anniversary celebration is on Saturday, October 26th, and guests can
expect an impressive night full of extraordinary cuisine and cocktails from
some of the hottest local and national
culinary masters.
The Meals on Wheels Chicago’s Celebrity Chef Ball generates one-fourth of the organization’s annual revenue, more than $200,000 each year. The funding supports an in-home meal delivery program for homebound seniors, as well as a home modification program to increase accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This year, MOWC also launched a pilot program serving in-home meals to individuals with disabilities under the age of 60.
The
Celebrity Chef Ball attracts over 800 guests for a unique ‘two-in-one’ style
function.
- The VIP Chef’s Table is the more intimate event of the evening taking place from 6:30 to 9:30pm. Priced at $350 per ticket, guests can mingle with over 40 celebrated chefs and experience live cooking and enjoy a 6-course dinner, plus dessert. The seated dining experience gives guests a behind the scenes look at the Chef’s culinary expertise. In addition, guests will also enjoy specialty cocktails from 13 of the city’s well-known mixologists. (Ticket includes entry to Chef’s Tasting Party.)
- Attendees to the Chef’s Tasting Party experience a reception-style ball including signature dishes from over 40 chefs. At $150 a ticket, guests to this portion of the evening can travel through the countless chef tasting booths from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am while enjoying open bars and specialty drink stations. The Party also features the silent auction, photo booth, and live performances by Sugar Rush and DJ Lani Love.

2013
marks the 25th anniversary of the Meals on Wheels Chicago Celebrity Chef Ball which
originally debuted as a chef brunch in the food court of the State of Illinois
Building atrium. Over the years the event and the organization has attracted
the support of sponsors including Banker's
Life and Casualty Co, Wirtz Beverage Group, William Grant, Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Illinois, Senior Lifestyle Corporation, Monahan Law Group, and
Travelzoo.
About Meals on Wheels Chicago
Meals
on Wheels Chicago (MOWC) was established in 1987 by a group of community
leaders, concerned citizens, and a primary community affiliate, the City of
Chicago, to address the unmet nutritional needs of the city’s homebound seniors
and individuals with disabilities. This collaborative, philanthropic effort
focused on raising private funds to supplement limited public dollars for City
programs that offered these two communities a choice in their care and living
arrangement, despite age, income, or ability level. Today, MOWC continues its private fundraising
efforts through special events, corporate and community partnerships, and
individual giving to support in-home meal delivery for homebound seniors, as
well as home modifications to increase accessibility for individuals with
disabilities.
