CITY PROVIDES A SPRING LIFT KIDS AND KITES FESTIVAL, MAY 1 IN LINCOLN PARK
Families suffering from both cabin and spring fever will shout May Day with the answer to their call being Mayor Daley’s Kids & Kites Festival, May 1, in Lincoln Park, presented by the City of Chicago and Harris Bank, in partnership with Anixter Center.
Anixter Center’s new brand is based on a kite which can fly but it needs support to keep rising higher and higher, to continue to grow stronger and reach its full potential. The Anixter Center kite is built using colored triangles representing areas of support: employment, health, community, education and residential. A star emerges from the center of the kite symbolizing each person reaching for their potential.
This annual festival celebrates a return to the outdoors in a fun and often big way as professional kite flyers demonstrate a “how to” as they maneuver the giant cat and octopus kites in the sky.
Kids can join in the fun by making, decorating and flying their own kites made from free kits provided by the City of Chicago and Walgreens (while supplies last). Kites will also be available for purchase at the Kite Harbor booth.
Big Kite Candy Drop Returns!
The Big Kite Candy Drop will once again happen during the festival. This children’s favorite feels like candy is dropping from the sky when it’s released from the specially filled kite.
Shrek the Musical tickets!
Proving that even “ogres” can be generous, festival attendees will have the opportunity to win a family four-pack of tickets to the Tony and Drama Desk
award-winning, SHREK the Musical, which will play the Cadillac Palace
Theatre for a limited engagement beginning July 13 – September 5. The SHREK street team will distribute Shrek ears so everyone can join in the fun.
Plaster of Paradise Refrigerator Magnets
The very popular craft tent featuring Plaster of Paradise offers kids the chance to decorate their own kite-shaped refrigerator magnet. Plaster of Paradise returns to Kids and Kites courtesy of Anixter Center.
The 12th Annual Kids & Kites Festival is May 1 in Lincoln Park at Cricket Hill (Montrose and Lake Shore Drive). Event hours are 10a.m. – 4p.m. and the festival includes strolling entertainment as well.
