Plant-based Food, News and Lifestyle Expert, Elysabeth Alfano, recaps June: "It's been a volatile month in the food industry with change towards plant-based products taking place at unprecendeted, lightning speed."
CHICAGO/LOS ANGELES – From her extensive interviews and combing of statistics, Plant—based Food, News and Lifestyle Expert, Elysabeth Alfano, discusses the sizemic shift that happened in the food industry in June.
  1. "Meat and dairy industries are moving towards plant-based products at lightning speed.  Partly pulled by increased consumer demand and partly pushed by consumer concerns about health, the environment and the inhumane treatment of animals, more and more big meat companies are jumping into the plant-based space," reports plant-based food, news and lifestyle expert, Elysabeth Alfano.  JBS, Purdue, Tyson, KFC (UK), Nestle are all getting in the game. 
  2. Four lawsuits were filed in June against Coca-Cola backed Fairlife, LLC and its owners, Mike and Sue McCloskey, by consumers claiming fraud due to alleged false marketing claims that they 'take extraordinary care and comfort for our cows'.  Several large grocery store chains, such as Jewel-Osco, have pulled the products. The law suits and social media's viral and visceral reaction to the  routine, shocking and graphic undercover video footage produced by Animal Recovery Mission (ARM) reveal that, once informed, many consumers don't agree with the cruelty inherent in the dairy industry
  3. Consumers are shifting their purchases away from dairy. Plant-based creamer is up 62%, plant-based ice cream is up 40% and plant-based yogurt is up 55% (2018 over 2017) according to the Good Food Institute and Nielsen. Plant-based milks already enjoy a whopping 15% of the market. 
  4. Sales of meat alternatives in restaurants have increased by 268% from 2018 to 2019 (compared to a 21.7% increase in the year prior), according to a recent analysis by food industry organization Dining Alliance. The report described the emerging plant-based meat industry as “hotter than the kitchen grill,” finding that the number of restaurants serving a meat alternative has increased by 26.4% from 2017 to 2019, as reported by VegNews. 
  5. New York Times best selling author, Kathy Freston (also known as the woman who got Oprah to try a vegan diet) revealed on the Awesome Vegans Podcast and Video Series with Elysabeth Alfano that she delivered a petition of over 220,000 signatures to McDonald's Hamburger University HQ in Chicago demanding a plant-based burger option. Referring to a vegan/plant-based burger, Freston notes, "We are saying loud and clear, we want McD's to have a McV." 
  6. Chicago-based business consulting firm, A.T. Kearney published a June report stating that 60% of consumers will not eat meat from slaughtered animals by 2040. The global meat industry is currently a $1.4 market. 
  7. Celebrity actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara lead a peaceful demonstration on National Animal Rights Day, June 2, in Los Angeles. The event had a turnout of 400 in LA alone, double the year before, and the demonstration was replicated in cities around the world. It received mainstream coverage by ABC, CBS, Univsion, Fox and Howard Stern, many of which and which had never before reported on the annual event. 
  8. Plant-based Burgers aren't the only items experiencing a mad rush.  On the Awesome Vegans Podcast and Video Series with Elysabeth Alfano, Marketing Manager of Chicago Vegan Foods, Dan Reed, explained that the company's signature product, Dandies Marshmallows, now sells 5 million bags a year. The space-shuttle type growth for the sweet treat comes from its lack of animal parts (gelatin) and use of all natural ingredients, according to Reed.  
  9. Learnings from the New York Plant-based World Conference point to the reality of high consumer demand for plant-based products: 1) the challenges of scaling up fast enough to meet consumer needs and 2) estabilshing reliable distribution lines. 
  10. With the Beyond Meat stock remaining at incredible highs, companies such as Purdue (with a plant-meat blended line of nuggets), Tyson (with a plant-meat blended line of burgers and nuggets) and Nestle (with 100% plant-based burger) offer new products. It remains to be seen if blended products make any sense for the consumer or the marketplace.
