Chicago Film Festival on WTTW11: HIPSTERS on Friday August 8 at 10pm
our 50th Anniversary this October 9-23, the Chicago International Film
Festival is proud to partner with WTTW11 to present a different film
each month from our exciting and diverse history. For the past five
decades the Festival has introduced Chicago audiences to new directors,
new voices and new visions from around the world. From award winners and
audience favorites, to first films by acclaimed directors, this series
showcases the outstanding programming that has defined the Festival
Chicago International Film Festival 50th Anniversary presents:
Moscow, 1955. Soviet
uniformity is the order of the day, and most of the city's younger
generations are happy to fall in line with the country's imposed
ideology. But in the swingin' secret juke joints along the city's
"Broadway," the threads are splashy, the cleavage is out, the lips are
glossed red, and the pompadours scrape the sky. Meet the hipsters. The
hatred of all the grim-faced comrades in Russia isn't going to stop them
from showing their true colors. Meanwhile, the straight-laced Mels
has been blindly marching along with the young "squares," led by the
militantly anti-hipster Katya. That is, until the night he meets Polly
during a KGB-style bust-up at the Pompadour Club. A love story wrapped
in a period piece wrapped in a musical, Hipsters is both infectiously
fun and a fitting reminder that those who forget the past are doomed to
repeat it. Russian with English subtitles. 125 minutes.
Shown at the 44th Chicago International Film Festival in 2008, Hipsters won the Gold Plaque for Best Art Direction.
