  Broadway In Chicago is thrilled to announce that Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois State Legislature have received the distinguished 2013 STAR OF TOURING BROADWAY AWARD at the annual Broadway League Awards today, May 15,2013, honoring excellence and achievement for Touring Broadway.

As stated by Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director, The Broadway League, “Governor Pat Quinn & the Illinois State Legislature are strong and vocal supporters of the Illinois theatre community.  They raise awareness about the essential role theatre, specifically Broadway, plays in the social, economic, and educational growth and vitality of Illinois.  Their leadership brought passage of the “Live Theatre Production Tax Credit Act,” to support live theatre.  Since its enactment in 2012, the legislation has already supported the musical tryouts of Kinky Boots and Big Fish.”

This is the third soundtrack from a Baz Luhrmann film to reach the top three, following William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!
 
The Great Gatsby had a very impressive opening in theaters this past weekend, taking in more than $50 million at the domestic box office.
 
Luhrmann stated, “It is enormously satisfying to have fans embrace both the movie and the soundtrack so completely.  Music was front and center in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s very beautiful and very modern novel, The Great Gatsby, and so we followed him in doing the same with this contemporary translation.  JAY Z, Anton Monsted, Jeymes Samuel and I had the benefit of working with some of today’s greatest artists on this film version of The Great Gatsby.  Blending modern-day music with the sounds of the Jazz Age had an immeasurable impact on the film, and I’m so pleased that the soundtrack is allowing audiences to enjoy the music long after they leave the theater.”

If you sense that your crystals are more than just "tools," and you'd like to know them more consciously and care for them confidently, this class is for you!  Discover how to go deeper in understanding and collaborating with these loving, powerful, unique beings from the heart of Mother Earth.You will experience a guided meditation to attune yourself to a crystal and consciously interact with it in order to effectively partner with the crystal for personal or professional healing work. You will also discover and have a chance to practice the three universally safe and effective methods for cleansing/clearing crystals. You'll learn simple healing techniques for your crystals as well as energy infusion techniques to expand a crystal's capacities for healing and service. There will also be special opportunities to receive channeled and personalized information about your crystals from the instructor! To get the greatest benefit from this class, you should own at least one crystal, desire to work with crystals at a deeper intuitive level, and have some experience with guided meditation (a plus but not required). 

After her spiritual awakening in 2011, Susan Sinclair immediately began receiving consciously channeled information and messages from crystals as fellow sentient beings. The crystals themselves have been her primary teachers, though she also has studied the writings of noted crystal authorities. Susan deeply resonates with the Wandjina people's saying: Yorro Yorro, Everything Standing up Alive, meaning that crystals are alive, sentient, and sometimes in need of healing from us as much as we are in need of healing from them!

Lillie’s Q Bucktown location slated to reopen mid-June;
Chef Charlie McKenna and Lillie’s Q team competing at Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest this weekend
 
  Charlie McKenna, chef and owner of Lillie’s Q that serves award-winning competition BBQ along with Southern favorites, is slated to reopen his Bucktown restaurant (1856 W North Ave) in mid-June pending inspections and permitting.

The Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q suffered fire and smoke damage when the restaurant’s hot water heater in the basement malfunctioned and caught fire back on March 14, 2013.

The Lillie’s Q Bucktown location has been closed since the fire. The Lillie’s Q outpost inside the Chicago French Market at 131 North Clinton Street in the West Loop is currently open and serving a limited menu from 10am until 7pm Monday thru Friday and from 10am until 4pm on Saturday.

“It’s been a long road trying to get Lillie’s Q in Bucktown back open, but we’re getting close,” McKenna said. “The outpouring of support from other chefs and restaurant owners, loyal customers, and friends of Lillie’s Q has been absolutely incredible. We’re hoping to put together a really amazing finish at Memphis In May this weekend, and ride that wave right into getting the Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q open. We can’t wait to open our doors again and feed everyone.”

Chef McKenna and his Lillie’s Q competition BBQ team (which includes his father, Quito) will compete in the whole pork shoulder category at the Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest in Memphis, Tennessee, this weekend. Memphis In May is widely regarded as the “Super Bowl” of BBQ competitions.

Over the past eight years in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May, the Lillie’s Q team placed 24th in 2012, 12th in 2011, 4th in 2010, 8th in 2009, 10th in 2008, 1st in 2007, and 4th in 2006. About 100 professional BBQ teams from around the world compete each year in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May.
 
The teams begin prepping and smoking in the morning on Friday, May 17. Judging is Saturday, May 18, and the award winners will be announced around 6:30pm that night.

MAY 18: LivingWell Cancer Resource Center holds 8th Annual Bridge Walk

EVERY STEP COUNTS FOR LIVINGWELL
LivingWell Cancer Resource Center Holds its 8th Annual Bridge Walk Sat., May 18 Stepping off from Fabyan Forest Preserve (Route 31) at 8:00 a.m.
 Th8th Annual Bridge Walk welcomes people of all ages to come together in a 5K walk along the Fox River to raise money and awareness for The LivingWell Cancer Resource Center. Pets and strollers are welcome. Interested individuals are invited to create teams of friends, families, neighbors and co-workers in a celebration that raises money critical to helping support LivingWell Cancer Resource Center programs and services. Participants will enjoy food, refreshments and entertainment.
All proceeds from the Bridge Walk will go to fund the 60 plus programs and services offered free of charge through LivingWell. The only comprehensive cancer care center in the western suburbs, LivingWell has served the needs of more than 10,000 people, providing services that encourage, educate and emotionally support people living with cancer, as well as their family members, caretakers and friends.
There is a $30 registration fee for adult participants (ages 13 and up), $20 fee for ages seven through 12, while children six and under and cancer survivors are free.

Witness history as Navy Pier’s own employee Clinton attempts to break a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® feat for the longest marathon on a fairground or theme park attraction, dedicated to the men and women of the Armed Forces. He will board the Ferris wheel at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and ride with no sleep for more than 30 hours. The Ferris wheel will be open continuously from 10 a.m. on May 17 through 8 p.m. on May 19. Regular ticket prices apply during Navy Pier operating hours. Also, ride the Ferris wheel for free from 10 p.m. – 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday night with a suggested donation of $3 to the USO. Service men and women are invited to visit the USO on Saturday, May 18 for free and discounted offers.

  Roots Handmade Pizza (1924 W Chicago Ave) will throw its Two-Year Anniversary Party from 11am until 2am on Wednesday, May 29 that will feature food and drink specials, free samples of the new “Chef Series” pizzas by Rick Ortiz of Antique Taco and Chef Chris Curren of Homestead, and free birthday cake from West Town Bakery & Diner.

All of Roots’ malt crust Quad Cities pizzas will be 20% off during its One-Year Anniversary Party (dine-in only). Drink specials include $2 6oz pours of the Roots House Brew by Two Brothers Brewing Company, $3 Cazadores tequila and 42 Below vodka chilled liquor tap shots, and $5 Grey Goose vodka cocktails from open to close during Roots’ Two-Year Anniversary Party.

Free slices of birthday cake provided by Roots’ sister and adjoining restaurant West Town Bakery & Diner will be given out to paying patrons in the evening during the Roots Two-Year Anniversary Party as well.

At 10pm during the Roots Two-Year Anniversary Party, the restaurant will give out free slices of its two new “Chef Series” pizzas to paying customers seated at the bar.

Chef Rick Ortiz of Antique Taco has created the Chili Cheese Curd Pizza exclusively for Roots. This pizza features chorizo chili, Brunkow cheddar cheese curds, Chihuahua cheese, Quad Cities mozzarella blend cheese, pickled jalapeños, pickled onions, cilantro cream, tortilla strips, black olives, and scallions.

Chef Chris Curren of Homestead has created the Lobster Pizza exclusively for Roots. This pizza features Maine lobster meat, roasted garlic purée, roasted cipollini onions, and three-month aged Manchego cheese.

The “Chef Series” pizzas by Ortiz and Curren will be available on the regular Roots menu shortly after the Roots Two-Year Anniversary Party, and they will join the two other “Chef Series” pizzas on the current Roots menu.

The Girl & The Goat Pizza by Chef Stephanie Izard is comprised of Pleasant Meadows goat sausage ragu topped with Quad Cities mozzarella blend cheese, smoked cheddar cheese, sharp aged cheddar cheese, and finished with a yuzu-maple drizzle.

The Lillie’s Q BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza by Chef Charlie McKenna is comprised of award-winning pulled pork that’s smoked over peach wood for eight hours at his restaurant, Lillie’s Q Hot Smoky BBQ sauce, Quad Cities mozzarella blend cheese, and topped with Lillie’s Q Carolina Dirt BBQ rub and coleslaw.
