Star of Touring Broadway Award for Governor Pat Quinn and Illinois State Legislature

Broadway In Chicago is thrilled to announce that Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois State Legislature have received the distinguished 2013 STAR OF TOURING BROADWAY AWARD at the annual Broadway League Awards today, May 15,2013, honoring excellence and achievement for Touring Broadway.

As stated by Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director, The Broadway League, “Governor Pat Quinn & the Illinois State Legislature are strong and vocal supporters of the Illinois theatre community.  They raise awareness about the essential role theatre, specifically Broadway, plays in the social, economic, and educational growth and vitality of Illinois.  Their leadership brought passage of the “Live Theatre Production Tax Credit Act,” to support live theatre.  Since its enactment in 2012, the legislation has already supported the musical tryouts of Kinky Boots and Big Fish.”

“I’m pleased that The Broadway League chose to honor our Governor and State Legislature.  Even in these tough economic times, or rather because of them, Governor Quinn and the State of Illinois Legislators have embraced the fact that theater is uniquely positioned not only to support the residents of our great state but also to serve as a major tourism attraction and economic engine."
-  Lou Raizin, President, Broadway In Chicago

Many from the Broadway community endorsed Governor Quinn and the Illinois State Legislature, including:

“I have always thought of Chicago as a long-run town and the Broadway business as we all know in New York is an economic generator.  As such, I am happy to see that Chicago realized the smart investment it would be for both Chicago and all of Illinois to support pre-Broadway and long-run Musicals.”
-   James Nederlander Sr., Nederlander

“Chicago has a wonderful theatre community with people who appreciate new work and these elected officials found a way to entice producers like myself to think of Chicago first.  In this day and age when musicals are becoming harder and harder to try out, it is leaders like this who deserve our admiration and accolades.”
-  Daryl Roth, Producer of Kinky Boots, Daryl Roth Productions

“Governor Quinn and the State of Illinois Legislators have made Chicago a more attractive place for us to bring new productions or those productions that we believe can run longer because of their leadership.”
-  David Stone, Producer, Wicked

The Broadway League, founded in 1930, is the national trade association for the Broadway industry.  The League’s 700-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers who present in nearly 200 markets in North America, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the theatre industry.  Each year, League members bring Broadway to nearly 30 million people in New York and on tour across the U.S. and Canada.  For more information, visit

May 15, 2013 — Santa Monica, CA — The Great Gatsby, the companion album to the Baz Luhrmann-directed movie of the same name, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart this week, selling 136,840 copies and becoming the best-selling movie soundtrack since The Hunger Games. This is the third soundtrack from a Baz Luhrmann film to reach the top three, following William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!
The Great Gatsby had a very impressive opening in theaters this past weekend, taking in more than $50 million at the domestic box office.
Luhrmann stated, “It is enormously satisfying to have fans embrace both the movie and the soundtrack so completely.  Music was front and center in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s very beautiful and very modern novel, The Great Gatsby, and so we followed him in doing the same with this contemporary translation.  JAY Z, Anton Monsted, Jeymes Samuel and I had the benefit of working with some of today’s greatest artists on this film version of The Great Gatsby.  Blending modern-day music with the sounds of the Jazz Age had an immeasurable impact on the film, and I’m so pleased that the soundtrack is allowing audiences to enjoy the music long after they leave the theater.”
The first single is BRIT Award winner Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful,” which was written specifically for the film. Watch the video here
The album was produced by Baz Luhrmann and executive produced by Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, who is also an executive producer on the film, and features original new music from artists that span several genres, including rock innovators Florence + the Machine, The xx, Gotye, and Jack White, multi-platinum artists U2, Beyoncé,, Fergie, and Jay Z himself, as well as newcomers Emeli Sandé and Quadron’s Coco O. Anton Monsted is the executive music supervisor.
Here’s what the critics have had to say about The Great Gatsby soundtrack:
“… Luhrmann uses music not simply as atmosphere or emotional punctuation but as a primary storytelling device, a means of putting the viewer in the world of his characters.” — The LA Times
“… musical roller coaster mixes electronica, hip-hop and rock with jazz-age sounds into a breathy, sexy, dangerous, electric result.” — The Washington Post
The Great Gatsby features a stunning array of hip-hop royals, pop champs and de rigueur alternative rockers. Distilling the essence of the Jazz Age though never completely reflecting it, this soundtrack is as much an event as is the film that inspired it.” — NPR
“The Gatsby soundtrack seems, on the whole, to be an extraordinary melding of vintage and contemporary sounds, fulfilling Jay-Z and Luhrmann's goal to ‘translate Jazz Age sensibilities’ into something that can speak to, and enchant, the modern listener.” … “Lana Del Rey's ‘Young and Beautiful’ proves itself a sweeping and gorgeous ballad, ably evoking the romantic drama of Fitzgerald's classic while taking full advantage of Del Rey as a no-brainer fit for this endeavor.” — Slant Magazine
Also available digitally is The Great Gatsby - The Jazz Recordings (A Selection of Yellow Cocktail Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film The Great Gatsby), which features The Bryan Ferry Orchestra performing songs from and inspired by the film.

‘Robust’ Oyster A Nod To Chicago’s Past
Fortune Fish & Gourmet is excited to announce the arrival of the Old 1871 Oyster.  A special preview of the Virginia-grown oyster will be premiering at the National Restaurant Association show held at Chicago’s McCormick Place from May 18-21. Those visiting the Fortune booth (#7461) from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday-Monday will be able to sample the fresh-shucked Old 1871’s.
The Old 1871 oyster is a tribute both to Chicago’s storied passion for oysters – they were long traded for pork to the East Coast – as well as the city’s blaze-battling firefighters. Yes, as legend has it, the members of Engine Company No. 3 slurped their way through similarly large-sized, Virginia-bred oysters -- known for their salty, full-bodied flavor and rich meats with hints of brine, grass and celery-- before battling the city’s most notorious, late-nineteenth century blaze.
“We are excited to release a Virginia oyster grown in the same style that Socialites and Firemen enjoyed in the “Oyster Saloons” of Chicago in the 1870’s,” says Fortune Fish & Gourmet’s Vice-President of Marketing, Mark Palicki, who notes that “Old 1871 Oysters represent the bravery and determination of the people of Chicago with a robust flavor and deep cups -- the way an oyster should be.”
Palicki and his Fortune peers visited East Coast oyster farms last fall and hand-selected the optimal growing space for the Old 1871.  The fruits of their labor are the delicious Old 1871’s. With a deep, elongated cup, they’re a perfect receptacle for the thick meats made super flavorful by the cold, salty Atlantic tides. For more information on the Old 1871 Oyster please call 630.860.7100 or visit

If you sense that your crystals are more than just "tools," and you'd like to know them more consciously and care for them confidently, this class is for you!  Discover how to go deeper in understanding and collaborating with these loving, powerful, unique beings from the heart of Mother Earth. You will experience a guided meditation to attune yourself to a crystal and consciously interact with it in order to effectively partner with the crystal for personal or professional healing work. You will also discover and have a chance to practice the three universally safe and effective methods for cleansing/clearing crystals. You'll learn simple healing techniques for your crystals as well as energy infusion techniques to expand a crystal's capacities for healing and service. There will also be special opportunities to receive channeled and personalized information about your crystals from the instructor! To get the greatest benefit from this class, you should own at least one crystal, desire to work with crystals at a deeper intuitive level, and have some experience with guided meditation (a plus but not required).

After her spiritual awakening in 2011, Susan Sinclair immediately began receiving consciously channeled information and messages from crystals as fellow sentient beings. The crystals themselves have been her primary teachers, though she also has studied the writings of noted crystal authorities. Susan deeply resonates with the Wandjina people's saying: Yorro Yorro, Everything Standing up Alive, meaning that crystals are alive, sentient, and sometimes in need of healing from us as much as we are in need of healing from them!

Lillie’s Q Bucktown location slated to reopen mid-June (Chicago)

Lillie’s Q Bucktown location slated to reopen mid-June;
Chef Charlie McKenna and Lillie’s Q team competing at Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest this weekend
Charlie McKenna, chef and owner of Lillie’s Q that serves award-winning competition BBQ along with Southern favorites, is slated to reopen his Bucktown restaurant (1856 W North Ave) in mid-June pending inspections and permitting.

The Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q suffered fire and smoke damage when the restaurant’s hot water heater in the basement malfunctioned and caught fire back on March 14, 2013.

The Lillie’s Q Bucktown location has been closed since the fire. The Lillie’s Q outpost inside the Chicago French Market at 131 North Clinton Street in the West Loop is currently open and serving a limited menu from 10am until 7pm Monday thru Friday and from 10am until 4pm on Saturday.

“It’s been a long road trying to get Lillie’s Q in Bucktown back open, but we’re getting close,” McKenna said. “The outpouring of support from other chefs and restaurant owners, loyal customers, and friends of Lillie’s Q has been absolutely incredible. We’re hoping to put together a really amazing finish at Memphis In May this weekend, and ride that wave right into getting the Bucktown location of Lillie’s Q open. We can’t wait to open our doors again and feed everyone.”

Chef McKenna and his Lillie’s Q competition BBQ team (which includes his father, Quito) will compete in the whole pork shoulder category at the Memphis In May World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest in Memphis, Tennessee, this weekend. Memphis In May is widely regarded as the “Super Bowl” of BBQ competitions.

Over the past eight years in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May, the Lillie’s Q team placed 24th in 2012, 12th in 2011, 4th in 2010, 8th in 2009, 10th in 2008, 1st in 2007, and 4th in 2006. About 100 professional BBQ teams from around the world compete each year in the whole pork shoulder category at Memphis In May.
The teams begin prepping and smoking in the morning on Friday, May 17. Judging is Saturday, May 18, and the award winners will be announced around 6:30pm that night.
Starting today there will be updates, photos, and videos of the Lillie’s Q team in action at Memphis In May via the Lillie’s Q social medial sites. You can find them on Facebook at and on Twitter at  and

About Lillie’s Q: Chef Charlie McKenna (formerly the sous chef at Tru and Avenues) opened Lillie’s Q restaurant in July 2010 specializing in award-winning competition BBQ, Southern favorites and sides in Bucktown as a homage to his family’s deep cooking roots. McKenna has competed on the competition BBQ circuit with his father and friends the last 10 years, and the team won the prestigious Memphis In May BBQ competition in 2007 in the whole pork shoulder category and placed in Top Ten every year from 2006 through 2010 and finished 12th in 2011. McKenna opened an outpost of Lillie’s Q in Destin, FL, with his parents in 2008. At Lillie’s Q in Chicago, McKenna is smoking pork shoulder for pulled pork, tri-tip, baby back ribs, and chicken in two custom built smokers over peach wood and lump charcoal. McKenna began cooking Southern favorites and sides with grandma Lillie and his mother at an early age and those standouts make their way onto the Lillie’s Q menu via shrimp & grits, pimiento cheese, fried pickles, boiled peanuts, Brunswick stew, baked beans, macaroni & cheese and banana pudding.  Lillie’s Q features moonshine-based specialty cocktails (like the “Morning Lillie” that’s a play on a Bloody Mary with a housemade meat stick), 10 All-American craft drafts and a rotating selection of about 30 All-American craft bottled beers. Located at 1856 W North Ave (773.772.5500), Lillie’s Q serves lunch and dinner daily from 11am-10pm Sunday thru Wednesday, and 11am-11pm Thursday thru Saturday. Visit the restaurant’s website at
