Himalayan Singing Bowls

with Edward Farnham

Suggested donation: $10 advance/$15 door

Info/registration: info@LifeForceArts.org or 773-327-7224

Read Edward's article about Himalayan singing bowls in LFA's blog Pantheon

This performance features overlapping layers of sound healing modalities, including Himalayan singing bowls, ganta bells, ting shaws (cymbals), gong, and mantra.
The instruments are made by Tibetan monks both as a method of healing and as meditation instruments, as part of a highly symbolic spiritual process using an alloy of at least seven metals, including pure steel from asteroids that hit the world's rooftop in the Himalayas.  They are formulated by the monks to work on many planes of our multidimensional being and can facilitate emotional catharsis, the release of blocked energies, and healing from the physical to spiritual.  They sound beautiful with primary notes and layers of overtones.  Mantras are words of power that use the primal creative force of sound as primal emanations for affecting any facet of our universal experience.  Together the instruments and mantra can function on many levels for profound effect.  Edward Farnham has studied numerous spiritual and healing techniques, including Himalayan bowls and sound healing with Richard Rudis, and mantra with Thomas Ashley-Farrand and his wife, Margalo or Satyabhama, two of the world's foremost experts on Hindu mantra. Edward is a singer with the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus (www.cgmc.org) and a painter who attempts to use the creative force as a vehicle to the divine.

Some sites are 30,000 years old. These are awesome, remote, rarely seen sites.  You will see the great variety of different art styles defined by time, geography and culture.

In the cold and frozen depths of the Arctic Ocean, Sedna, the primal Inuit goddess of creation and destruction, calls out to her daughters to face their Shadows. Her myth does read like the worst of all narratives of victimization, betrayal, and cruelty. It is a condensation of the narrative written by patriarchy for ALL women. However, in the darkness and solitude of the deep, transformation occurs. Strength is reclaimed. Healing begins.

Join Anna Applegate for an evening of exploring lived myth through the lenses of storytelling, shamanic journeying, group sharing, lecture, simple body movement, journaling/drawing (paper and pens/sketching materials will be provided), and the conscious crafting of sacred community ritual to bring calm to the inner seas as well as the oceans of our fragile planet. To the classic beat of the shaman’s drum, journey to Adlivun, Sedna’s Arctic Underworld. Name your woundedness and take the steps toward healing in the company of supportive sisters. Learn from other goddesses of the deep. Celebrate the Mysteries of the Living Waters while reclaiming the Power of the Divine Feminine and renewing your commitment to Life and the preservation of the world’s jeopardized oceans. To commemorate Women’s History Month in addition to the Spirit Guides exhibit at LFAC, this event is for women only.

Anna Applegate, M.A, is an ordained Priestess of the Fellowship of Isis’ Temple of Isis and Iseum of Isis Serpentarius (California). A native Chicagoan, she holds an M.A. degree in English from Loyola University Chicago and is a published poet. She also enjoys sculpting, and the first from her series of Goddess-inspired clay statues (“Tirgata,” © 2004) is making its debut in LFAC’s Spirit Guides exhibit. When Sedna came screaming into Anna’s life in December 2012, Anna knew she’d acquired a powerful new ally in her personal spirit workings as well as a divine spokesperson for the tremendous upheavals accompanying our planet’s embrace of a New Aeon.

The patterns that come down through our ancestral lines determine how we see ourselves, how we choose to live, how we relate to others. We often carry the pain of our families, even back many generations to ancestors we are not consciously aware of. Their unresolved traumas and unfinished business eventually turn into our symptoms and problems. Illness, anxiety, addictions, emotional and physical pain, relationship issues, money issues, and lack of success can all be forms of unspoken family loyalty.

In Family Constellations Soul-Work, we open a sacred space in which participants help one another by representing each others family members and ancestors, enacting scenes from the past. Through this process, unresolved family issues can be seen and brought towards resolution.  Within a day, your life can change as you let go of entanglements and burdens and reconnect to your own destiny.
Danuta Jirik, Ph.D. is a holistic/shamanic healer. She is certified by Bert Hellinger in his 'Moving with the Spirit-Mind New Family Constellations', and completed advanced training with Mark Wolynn of Hellinger Institute of PA. She blends her shamanic training with the constellation work in a unique and powerful way, holding a safe space in partnership with the compassionate healing and healing spirits. Please join us for an evening of fun and creativity relating to the art in the Spirit Guides exhibit! This workshop is for ANYONE who would like to explore simple forms of poetry and creative movement exercises to express their impressions of visual art. We'll begin with an energizing warmup called the BrainDance. Then in small groups, we will create simple "shape dances" based on the poetry form of a cinquain (which I will set up and we will complete together). The poem and dance will be inspired by selected artwork in LFA's space. Our dances will incorporate shapes and lines from the artwork, translated into our own body shapes and movements. NO dance experience required, only basic everyday movement. Special needs can be accommodated. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in, and stocking feet or bare feet. Bring your sense of humor and a spirit of PLAY as you let your body be the artist!
Rev. Susan Sinclair studied with Anne Green Gilbert at Creative Dance Center in Seattle (www.creativedance.org
), where she learned the BrainDance warmup and brain-compatible dance teaching methods. Susan has taught adult and children's creative dance classes and choreographed solo and group liturgical dances. She agrees with Merce Cunningham that "dance is a spiritual activity in physical form".

Come celebrate the coming of the green with Wild Onion Grove at our Spring Equinox celebration. Ár nDraíoht Féin ("our own druidry" in modern Irish) started in 1983 as an offshoot of the Reformed Druids of North America (RDNA).  ADF Druidry may not be familiar to many, but it shares quite a few beliefs and philosophies with other NeoPagan faiths. We revere the Earth, worship Gods and Goddesses and believe in magic.. ADF follows a Core Order of Ritual (http://www.adf.org/rituals/explanations/core-order.html
) in all our rites, which serves as a common thread regardless of the rite's cultural focus. We always give a pre-rite briefing for newcomers so that they know what to expect. Spirit Guides are helpful beings of the non-physical plane who aid, advise and heal us. They give us wisdom and protection, especially when we journey inward. Spirit Guides can appear in the form of animals, humans, crystals, plants, angels, ancestors, gods, goddesses, faeries and other spiritual beings.  They come to teach people important lessons in life. We communicate with our Spirit Guides through meditation, visions, dreams, signs, omens, art and other ways we perceive the invisible realm.  LFAC's Spirit Guides show especially focuses on art that helps viewers understand the concept of spirit guides, reach beyond mundane reality, and meet the viewer's own allies on the Otherside. The guides are there to help us if we just open the path between the worlds.

We focus on the arts as a common ground of human expression, where artists and audiences of diverse spiritual traditions can honor each other, and share their personal and collective experiences of the spiritual aspect of life. LFA's goals are to develop spiritual artists, the spiritual arts audience, and the spiritual arts community. The Foundation operates Life Force Arts Center (LFAC), Chicago's spiritual art gallery and performance space, which presents visual art exhibits, dance, theater and music performances, author book signings and workshops with artists who are experts in spiritual artmaking.
