FYI: CITY PROVIDES A SPRING LIFT KIDS AND KITES FESTIVAL, MAY 1 IN LINCOLN PARK

CITY PROVIDES A SPRING LIFT KIDS AND KITES FESTIVAL, MAY 1 IN LINCOLN PARK
Families suffering from both cabin and spring fever will shout May Day with the answer to their call being Mayor Daley’s Kids & Kites Festival, May 1, in Lincoln Park, presented by the City of Chicago and Harris Bank, in partnership with Anixter Center.

Anixter Center’s new brand is based on a kite which can fly but it needs support to keep rising higher and higher, to continue to grow stronger and reach its full potential. The Anixter Center kite is built using colored triangles representing areas of support: employment, health, community, education and residential. A star emerges from the center of the kite symbolizing each person reaching for their potential.

This annual festival celebrates a return to the outdoors in a fun and often big way as professional kite flyers demonstrate a “how to” as they maneuver the giant cat and octopus kites in the sky.

Kids can join in the fun by making, decorating and flying their own kites made from free kits provided by the City of Chicago and Walgreens (while supplies last). Kites will also be available for purchase at the Kite Harbor booth.

Big Kite Candy Drop Returns!

The Big Kite Candy Drop will once again happen during the festival. This children’s favorite feels like candy is dropping from the sky when it’s released from the specially filled kite.
Shrek the Musical tickets!

Proving that even “ogres” can be generous, festival attendees will have the opportunity to win a family four-pack of tickets to the Tony and Drama Desk
award-winning, SHREK the Musical, which will play the Cadillac Palace

Theatre for a limited engagement beginning July 13 – September 5. The SHREK street team will distribute Shrek ears so everyone can join in the fun.

Plaster of Paradise Refrigerator Magnets

The very popular craft tent featuring Plaster of Paradise offers kids the chance to decorate their own kite-shaped refrigerator magnet. Plaster of Paradise returns to Kids and Kites courtesy of Anixter Center.

The 12th Annual Kids & Kites Festival is May 1 in Lincoln Park at Cricket Hill (Montrose and Lake Shore Drive). Event hours are 10a.m. – 4p.m. and the festival includes strolling entertainment as well.
Anixter Center provides an array of effective, innovative services to more than 5,500 children and adults per year through over 70 programs at 30 locations across greater Chicago. For over 90 years, Anixter Center has offered support for individuals living with physical, cognitive, developmental, sensory, psychiatric or HIV/AIDS related disabilities. Services include life skills, communication, health care, counseling, education, employment and recreation. www.anixter.org

FYI: CRUISE SEASON BEGINS FOR THE CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION

THE BEST WAY TO SEE CHICAGO IS FROM THE RIVER

CRUISE SEASON BEGINS FOR THE CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION

THE BEST WAY TO SEE CHICAGO IS FROM THE RIVER
The official Chicago Architecture Foundation architecture river cruise season opens May 1, but tickets are available now. New this year: two “date night” cruises every Thursday and Friday evenings at 5:30 pm starting in June.

Seeing the city from the vantage point of the river gives a whole new feel to the experience. The architecture river cruise is offered aboard Chicago's First Lady Cruises cruising yachts, with open-air decks as well as air conditioned interior seating.

Chicago Architecture Foundation - certified volunteer docents provide the fact-filled and enjoyable commentary on Chicago’s architecture during the ninety-minute tour. “People from as far away as Australia and Argentina or as close as the south loop enjoy the cruise,” said Jason Neises, Chicago Architecture Foundation VP of Tours. “The experience is always new because our docents keep up-to-date with new construction along the river and include all the news in their commentary.”

The cruise highlights 53 historic and architecturally significant sites including: the Trump Tower, Merchandise Mart, 333 W. Wacker, the Wrigley Building, the Tribune Tower, the Sears Tower, River City, and Marina City. The cruise also includes the North Branch of the Chicago River with buildings such as The Montgomery, formerly the world headquarters for Montgomery Ward; the Chicago Tribune printing press plant; Goose Island; Kinzie Park development; Riverbend and the clustered glass River Cottages.

All Chicago Architecture Foundation cruises depart from the lower level and southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive. The staircase to the ticket window and dock is marked by a blue awning. The 2010 Tour Schedule runs through November 21. The Chicago Architecture Foundation sells advance tickets (online or by telephone) through TicketMaster. The print-at-home option allows quicker check-in for passengers at the dock. Tickets are $32/person and are available at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Shop, 224 S. Michigan Avenue or at the Chicago’s First Lady ticket window at the dock. Individual tickets are available by phone at 1-800-982-2787, or online at www.ticketmaster.com/rivercruise
. Special group rates/groups of 20 or more – 312-322 1131.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) is a nonprofit organization offering architecture tours, free exhibitions, and youth and adult education programs. Current exhibitions are Chicago Model City and B Like Burnham; the Chicago Architecture Foundation is located at 224 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60604. For further information visit www.architecture.org or call 312.922.3432.

The fleet of Chicago First Lady Cruises has been the official vessels for the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise since 1993, operating more than 1,600 tours annually to the general public with commentary provided by more than 100 CAF-certified volunteer docents during its May-November season. Chicago’s First Lady Cruises owns and operates four luxury yachts: Chicago’s First Lady, Chicago’s Little Lady, Chicago’s Fair Lady and Lady Grebe. All are available for private charter cruising each evening. As stewards of Chicago’s waterways, Chicago’s First Lady is dedicated to helping protect the environment.
